Rafael Devers Open to Position Change if Alex Bregman Joins Red Sox
Rafael Devers has expressed a willingness to transition from third base to the designated hitter position, contingent upon the Boston Red Sox successfully acquiring Alex Bregman. The three-time All-Star's recent interaction on social media, where he liked a post from a Red Sox podcast discussing Bregman's potential arrival to play third base, has sparked interest among fans and analysts alike. This move would allow Devers to focus on hitting rather than defensive responsibilities.
Initially, Red Sox manager Alex Cora and chief baseball officer Craig Breslow dismissed the notion of moving Devers off third base during the winter meetings. However, in recent weeks, Breslow adjusted the team's stance, stating on December 30 that 'as of now' the plan remains for Devers to be the starting third baseman in 2025. Breslow also noted their satisfaction with Devers' offseason work, while keeping the door open for opportunities to improve the team.
The Red Sox have been linked to Bregman, but reports indicate their interest may be diminishing. MLB.com's John Denton highlighted that the team 'could be close' to withdrawing from the bidding for the 30-year-old star. This shift occurs amid speculation that Nolan Arenado could become available, as he is reportedly willing to waive his no-trade clause should the St. Louis Cardinals negotiate a deal with Boston. Regardless of whether the Red Sox secure Bregman or Arenado, either would substantially enhance the team's defensive capabilities at third base, an area where Devers has struggled significantly, ranking as one of the weakest defensively since 2018. This change could enable Devers to concentrate on his offensive strengths, where he has posted a commendable .279/.354/.519 slash line since the start of the 2021 season.
