Paul George recently shared his thoughts on the fan reception in Los Angeles following his return to the city. On his podcast, 'Podcast P', the Philadelphia 76ers wing expressed disappointment at the Intuit Dome not being filled to capacity, which he suggested indicates that the Los Angeles Clippers have not yet established themselves as a primary team in the city. George noted that he had not termed the Clippers as the city’s 'B team' outright but indicated a sentiment that they were perceived that way by the local fan base.
'What did I say that was wrong? I did not call the Clippers the B team. I said it felt like the B team… But they proved me right. They aren't packing out Intuit Dome. That's your home… Go support them,' George articulated during the episode. His comments come after spending five seasons with the Clippers before signing a four-year, $212 million deal with the 76ers in July.
In his first matchup against the Clippers since his offseason departure, George contributed 18 points and seven rebounds, although the 76ers fell short, losing 110-98. In his initial five games with Philadelphia, he is averaging 17.2 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 5.2 assists per game. Meanwhile, the Clippers have had a slightly better start to the season, holding a record of 6-5, even as they navigate the absence of star player Kawhi Leonard, who is sidelined indefinitely due to a knee injury. The Clippers are making strides to shed the perception of being the 'B team' in Los Angeles, particularly with the recent opening of the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California, allowing them to play in a venue exclusively theirs. However, George's remarks highlighted a current attendance average of 16,827 fans, down from the 18,945 they averaged at Crypto.com Arena last season, illustrating that the team still has work to do in fostering stronger local support.
