Nolan Arenado Trade Market Begins to Narrow Ahead of 2025 Season
As the 2025 MLB season approaches, the trade market for St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado appears to be diminishing, with reports indicating that the Boston Red Sox may be the lone team interested in pursuing a deal. Katie Woo of Moneyline has pointed out that multiple league sources suggest the Red Sox represent Arenado's most viable option for a trade prior to the upcoming season.
Woo further elaborated that the Red Sox are actively seeking to acquire free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman. The outcome of this pursuit is expected to significantly influence how aggressively the team would approach a potential trade for Arenado. Should Boston fail to secure Bregman, they may pivot towards negotiating a trade for Arenado. However, such a move could depend on the possibility of relocating Rafael Devers to first base, as Arenado, while open to switching positions, is generally regarded as the stronger defender at third base. Additionally, a trade could potentially involve moving Triston Casas, though it remains uncertain whether the Red Sox would entertain such scenarios or if they would be open to absorbing a large portion of Arenado's salary.
In the 2024 season, Arenado showcased his abilities by participating in 152 games, culminating in a batting average of .272, accompanied by 16 home runs and 71 RBIs. Acknowledged as a ten-time Gold Glove winner and an eight-time All-Star, Arenado continues to pursue his first World Series title. Achieving this goal may require him to depart from a Cardinals team that has experienced back-to-back seasons without playoff appearances. The Red Sox, similarly eager to enhance their roster following three consecutive years of missing the postseason, have begun their offseason efforts by strengthening their pitching staff with the acquisition of starter Garrett Crochet from the Chicago White Sox and signing free-agent starters Walker Buehler and Patrick Sandoval. To further solidify their lineup, acquiring Arenado would represent a significant step toward adding a reliable veteran presence capable of consistent production.
