NFL Rookie Quarterbacks Enter Their Second Year: A Look Ahead to 2025

The transition from college football to the NFL can be challenging for many rookies, particularly for quarterbacks. Each player develops at their own pace and may face varying degrees of pressure based on team expectations and investment. While most rookies experience a learning curve, a select few make significant impacts right from the outset. One player who defied expectations was Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels, who not only started from Day 1 but also threw for over 3,500 yards, led his team in rushing, and contributed to an NFC Championship Game appearance.
Typically, after spending a year in the NFL system, expectations shift dramatically for draft class standouts. In their second year, many former first-round picks are anticipated to demonstrate marked improvement, having had a full offseason to refine their skills. A recent analysis from Moneyline highlighted eight top selections from the 2024 NFL draft, including three quarterbacks, stressing the importance of growth in the upcoming 2025 season. Caleb Williams, who was drafted by the Chicago Bears, initially had reservations about joining the franchise but ultimately committed. The change in coaching, with the arrival of offensive playcaller Ben Johnson, means Williams must adapt and elevate his preparation and on-field decision-making to fulfill the potential expected of him.
The Chicago Bears have bolstered their offensive lineup by acquiring key players to support Williams, including linemen Joe Thuney, Drew Dalman, and Jonah Jackson, along with the selection of tight end Colston Loveland and wide receiver Luther Burden III in the draft. Williams is expected to focus on improving his footwork, understanding pre- and post-snap reads, and timing. Meanwhile, he will be constantly compared to fellow quarterback Jayden Daniels, who was also a highly-regarded prospect in the previous draft.
