NFL Expands Streaming Presence with Netflix

During the 2024 season, NFL games were aired on Netflix for the first time, marking a significant milestone for the streaming platform. These broadcasts are set to continue with a doubleheader on Christmas Day 2025, indicating a growing partnership between the NFL and Netflix.
In a discussion on The Town with Matthew Belloni, CNBC's Alex Sherman revealed insights from a conversation with Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos, who acknowledged ambitions for expanding the streaming of NFL games. Sherman reported Sarandos as stating their desire to explore adding more games beyond the scheduled Christmas matchups, with discussions involving NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell potentially leading to a package deal that includes up to 15 games. The idea focuses on creating unique viewing experiences that could enhance the appeal of NFL broadcasts on the platform.
The Christmas Day doubleheader in 2024 was designed to have the feel of marquee events. The Kansas City Chiefs, led by quarterback Patrick Mahomes, triumphed over the Pittsburgh Steelers, while the Baltimore Ravens secured a victory against the Houston Texans that featured a halftime show by Beyoncé in her hometown of Houston. According to a Netflix press release, these games became the two most streamed NFL matches in U.S. history. The upcoming Christmas Day slate features the Dallas Cowboys taking on the Washington Commanders at 1 p.m. ET, followed by the Detroit Lions matching up against the Minnesota Vikings at 4:30 p.m. ET. Notably, these games could be pivotal in the NFC East and NFC North divisions, with only the Cowboys failing to reach the playoffs last season among the featured teams. Known as America's Team, the Cowboys are anticipated to attract a large audience, regardless of their performance expectations with players such as Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and George Pickens. Given the integration of Thursday night games on Prime Video and playoff games streaming on Peacock, as well as Netflix's Christmas doubleheader, the trend of expanding the NFL's streaming presence appears both prevalent and promising.
