MLB Upholds Decision to Dismiss Umpire Pat Hoberg for Violating Gambling Policy
Major League Baseball has upheld its decision to terminate umpire Pat Hoberg following an appeal process. The league determined that Hoberg violated its gambling policy, which mandates strict adherence to the integrity of the game. Although there was no evidence to suggest that Hoberg engaged in wagering on games or manipulated outcomes, it was found that he shared betting accounts with individuals who participated in baseball betting activities.
MLB insider Jessica Kleinschmidt reported the league's statement, which highlighted that disciplinary measures were enforced due to Hoberg's 'failure to uphold the integrity of the game by sharing sports betting accounts with a professional poker player and friend who bet on baseball.' The statement further accused Hoberg of intentionally deleting messages that were central to the investigation of his actions. Following a thorough investigation that began in February 2024, when Hoberg opened a betting account linked to another's betting activity, the league decided to relieve him of his duties by May 2024.
In his own statement, Hoberg accepted responsibility for his misjudgments while firmly maintaining that he has never bet on baseball nor provided insider information for the purpose of betting. He acknowledged that his conduct did not meet the standards expected of MLB umpires, noting, 'Upholding the integrity of the game has always been of the utmost importance to me.' Hoberg, who made his MLB debut in 2014 and was known as one of the league's premier ball-strike umpires, will be eligible to apply for reinstatement in spring training 2026.
