Luka Dončić Signs Major Contract with Los Angeles Lakers Following Trade

Luka Dončić has officially committed to the Los Angeles Lakers after a significant trade last season, solidifying his position within the franchise. On Saturday, Dončić signed a three-year, $165 million contract, as confirmed by his agent Bill Duffy to Moneyline's Shams Charania. Post-signing, Dončić addressed the media during a press conference and swiftly returned to training, demonstrating his commitment to excellence.
This offseason, Dončić was eligible for a lucrative four-year, $229 million extension, with the potential to negotiate a five-year, $296 million deal had he opted to wait until next summer. ESPN's Brian Windhorst reported that there was some uncertainty within the Lakers regarding Dončić's decision to sign, as the organization was reportedly 'a little bit stressed out' about the situation. Nevertheless, Dončić had previously indicated his willingness to stay with the Lakers by playing a role in recruiting fellow players to the franchise in July.
In a stunning move that shocked the NBA landscape, the Dallas Mavericks traded Dončić to the Lakers in return for Anthony Davis, marking one of the most significant trades in league history. Already recognized as the franchise's face, Dončić had led the Mavericks to the NBA Finals just a year prior. Although Dončić's new contract is substantial, it does not reach the heights he could have attained while remaining with the Mavericks. Following the trade, ESPN's Bobby Marks noted that Dončić lost eligibility for a super-max extension that could have yielded $345 million over five years. Despite averaging an impressive 28.2 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 7.7 assists per game across both Dallas and Los Angeles during the 2024-25 season, the Lakers' postseason aspirations were curtailed when they fell to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round of the playoffs. Adjustments to their roster have been made since, with the aim of better supporting Dončić’s playing style, as they look to contend for an 18th championship in the upcoming season.
