DeAaron Fox Signs Max Contract with San Antonio Spurs Following Trade

De'Aaron Fox has officially secured a significant new contract with the San Antonio Spurs after being acquired during the NBA trade deadline in February. The star point guard has signed a four-year, $229 million maximum contract, as confirmed by his agent Rich Paul in a statement to ESPN's Shams Charania. Prior to this contract, Fox was under a five-year, $163 million deal with the Sacramento Kings, which would have made him a free agent after the 2025-26 season.
After a few months with the Spurs, Fox expressed his desire to continue with the team during the offseason, reiterating this intention in June. Despite the presence of talented young players already in the Spurs' backcourt, the organization signaled that retaining Fox was a priority. A Spurs executive stated, 'When we made that trade, we knew what the contract status was, of course. We see De'Aaron as someone who can grow with our young players and be a real leader for us. We’re hopeful we can make something happen to keep him in San Antonio for a long time.'
Fox was part of a three-team trade involving the Kings and the Chicago Bulls, where Sacramento acquired Zach LaVine, Sidy Cissoko, and several draft picks, while Chicago received Zach Collins, Tre Jones, Kevin Huerter, and a 2025 first-round pick. In his 17 games with the Spurs, Fox averaged 19.7 points, 6.8 assists, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game. Partnering Fox with highly regarded rookie Victor Wembanyama positions the Spurs for a potential championship run, the franchise's first since 2014. However, the team's aspirations faced challenges as Wembanyama was sidelined due to a blood clot in his shoulder towards the end of the 2024-25 season. Fortunately, the Spurs remain optimistic about Wembanyama's return for the start of the 2025-26 season. The organization is also set to introduce two promising prospects from the recent NBA draft: Dylan Harper, selected second overall from Rutgers, and Carter Bryant, picked 14th from Arizona. With Fox and Wembanyama as the core foundation, the Spurs aim to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2019, as they anticipate early contributions from their rookies.
