Members of the New York Giants organization are reportedly expressing dissatisfaction with the decision to bench quarterback Daniel Jones. According to Fox Sports' Jordan Schultz, there is a sense of disappointment among players, many of whom believe the move was primarily a financial one.
Offensive tackle Dexter Lawrence emphasized Jones' position, stating, 'He's the QB1. To me, he's the best quarterback on the team.' Another anonymous player shared frustration over the situation, suggesting the decision was driven by monetary considerations. 'We're not idiots. They did it because of money. So be it,' the player remarked, adding, 'But Daniel has been all class, never complained, and is now being completely disregarded. The team record is bad. You can point fingers everywhere. To try to blame him is trash, and making him third string is weak as f--k.'
Jones is currently in the sixth year of his contract with the Giants, with $30 million owed in 2025 and $46.5 million in 2026. The contract includes a clause that guarantees $23 million should he suffer an injury preventing him from passing a physical next March. Furthermore, if he remains on the team on the fifth day of the 2025 league year, $12 million of his 2025 salary becomes guaranteed. Should the Giants opt to release or trade Jones this offseason, they would face a dead-money salary-cap hit of $22.21 million. However, they could spread this hit across two seasons if they designate him as a post-June 1 release. With Jones benched, New York turns to Tommy DeVito as the starter, alongside Drew Lock as backup. DeVito, who recorded 1,101 passing yards, eight touchdowns, and three interceptions last season, is set to make his first start against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, aiming to improve the Giants' struggles following a 2-8 start.
