Former Miami Heat Employee Charged with Theft of Game-Worn Jerseys and Memorabilia

A former employee of the Miami Heat organization faced court charges on Tuesday for allegedly transporting and transferring stolen goods across state lines. Marcos Thomas Perez, a 25-year veteran of the City of Miami Police Department and a former security officer for the Heat, is accused of stealing millions of dollars' worth of memorabilia from the team's Kaseya Center over a span of nearly a decade, from 2016 to 2025.
The U.S. Attorney's Office of the Southern District of Florida revealed that Perez, having had limited access to a secured equipment room that housed hundreds of game-worn jerseys and other memorabilia intended for a future museum, allegedly pilfered more than 400 items during his tenure with the team. Investigations suggest that he sold over 100 of these stolen items for an estimated total of $2 million within a three-year timeframe.
Among the stolen items was a jersey worn by LeBron James during the NBA Finals, which Perez reportedly sold for $100,000. That particular jersey later fetched a staggering $3.7 million at a Sotheby’s auction. In April, law enforcement executed a search warrant at Perez's residence, leading to the seizure of approximately 300 stolen game-worn jerseys and other memorabilia. The Miami Heat organization has confirmed that the items in question were indeed taken from their facilities.
