Former Miami Heat Employee Charged with Theft of Game-Worn Memorabilia

A former employee of the Miami Heat appeared in court on Tuesday facing charges of transporting and transferring stolen goods across state lines. The allegations suggest that Marcos Thomas Perez, a retired officer with a 25-year tenure at the City of Miami Police Department and a former security officer for the team, stole millions of dollars worth of items from the Heat over a span of several years.
According to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida, Perez was an individual with limited access to the secured equipment room at the Kaseya Center, where numerous game-worn jerseys and other memorabilia were stored. The room housed items that the Miami Heat intended to include in an upcoming museum exhibit. Allegedly, Perez sold over 100 stolen items, amassing approximately $2 million in total sales during a three-year period. Notably, among the stolen items was a jersey worn by LeBron James during the NBA Finals, which Perez sold for $100,000 before it fetched an astounding $3.7 million at a Sotheby’s auction.
In April, law enforcement officials executed a search warrant at Perez’s residence, leading to the seizure of around 300 stolen game-worn jerseys and memorabilia. The U.S. Attorney's Office confirmed that the items recovered were indeed stolen from the Miami Heat’s facilities.
