Former Miami Heat Employee Charged with Interstate Transport of Stolen Goods

A former employee of the Miami Heat appeared in court on Tuesday, facing charges related to the transport and transfer of stolen goods across state lines. Marcos Thomas Perez, a retired City of Miami Police Department veteran and former security officer for the team, is accused of stealing millions of dollars worth of items from the Kaseya Center between 2016 and 2025.
Among the stolen items are over 400 game-worn jerseys, many of which were intended for future display in a planned museum for the Miami Heat. The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida pointed out that Perez had special access to a secured equipment room that housed these jerseys and other team memorabilia. In total, Perez allegedly sold more than 100 stolen items, accumulating approximately $2 million in sales revenue over a three-year period.
Notably, one of the key items stolen included a jersey worn by NBA superstar LeBron James during the NBA Finals, which Perez reportedly sold for $100,000. This particular jersey later garnered significant attention at a Sotheby’s auction where it was sold for a staggering $3.7 million. In April, law enforcement officials executed a search warrant at Perez's residence, recovering around 300 stolen jerseys and memorabilia. The Miami Heat organization has since confirmed that these items were indeed taken from their facilities.
