Evgeni Malkins Stanley Cup Rings Stolen in Burglary Incident
Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin's three Stanley Cup rings were reported stolen during a burglary at his home on Saturday, according to a joint report from Jennifer Borrasso, Mike Darnay, and Patrick Damp of KDKA in Pittsburgh. The Penguins confirmed the incident, stating that Malkin's residence in the Pittsburgh suburbs was targeted while he was attending a game at PPG Paints Arena.
The Penguins issued a statement acknowledging the burglary, which occurred on the same day the team faced off against the Ottawa Senators, suffering a 5-0 defeat. Malkin, sidelined due to an upper-body injury, informed The Athletic's Rob Rossi and Alex Andrejev that no one was present at his home in Sewickley Heights, Pennsylvania, when the break-in occurred. He also confirmed that his Stanley Cup rings were among the items missing.
At 38 years old, Malkin was instrumental in helping the Penguins secure the Stanley Cup during the 2008-09, 2015-16, and 2016-17 seasons. He earned the prestigious Conn Smythe Trophy in 2009 after an impressive postseason performance that included 14 goals and 22 assists over 24 games. This incident is part of a concerning trend, as athletes across various sports have been targeted in similar burglary incidents in recent months. Notable victims include Kansas City Chiefs players Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, Dallas Mavericks guard Luka Dončić, and Dallas Stars forward Tyler Seguin. Reports from ABC News in December highlighted that the FBI had indicated a systematic approach to targeting professional athletes' homes, often due to the perception that such residences contain high-value items.
