Potential Trade Scenarios for Stars Jason Robertson

      NHL•
Potential Trade Scenarios for Stars Jason Robertson

The recent weeks have posed challenges for Dallas Stars fans, who witnessed the team exit the Western Conference Final for the third consecutive year. The Stars were eliminated in five games by the Edmonton Oilers, the same opponents who ended their playoff run last season. Furthermore, the decision to pull goaltender Jake Oettinger early in the final game has raised questions regarding head coach Pete DeBoer and the reasoning behind that choice.

In light of these difficulties, discussions have emerged regarding the potential trade of superstar winger Jason Robertson. This speculation was sparked by insights from hockey analyst Jeff Marek, particularly considering Robertson's contract situation as he heads into the final year of a deal that carries a $7.75 million cap hit. As the Stars prepare to navigate salary cap constraints— with $90.5 million already committed next season— trading Robertson could provide the team with the flexibility needed to make essential adjustments.

The Anaheim Ducks have been mentioned as a plausible trade partner for Robertson, primarily because they possess ample cap space and are in a growth phase with young talent like Troy Terry and Trevor Zegras. The Ducks could feasibly manage Robertson's contract while also negotiating an extension. Additionally, the Ducks have several promising defensive prospects, such as Olen Zellweger and Jackson LaCombe, which could appeal to Dallas if they seek additional defensive assistance in a trade.

Though not the first team that comes to mind for a Robertson trade, the Ottawa Senators emerge as a team of interest. Under new ownership, the Senators returned to the playoffs and will look to sustain that momentum. Acquiring Robertson would significantly enhance their forward group, which includes talents like Brady Tkachuk and Tim Stützle. However, Ottawa's limitations in defensive depth and draft capital complicate potential trades.

If the Stars prefer to avoid trading within the Western Conference, the Calgary Flames could present an intriguing option. Acquiring Robertson would provide Calgary with a prolific offensive asset to complement players like Jonathan Huberdeau and Nazem Kadri. The Flames have depth on defense—namely, Rasmus Andersson and MacKenzie Weegar—that could facilitate a swap without sacrificing too much of their future.

The Buffalo Sabres represent another team potentially positioned to trade for Robertson, albeit through a different lens. The Sabres, known for their depth of prospects, are now considering roster players like RFAs JJ Peterka and Bo Byram as possible trade chips. Acquiring Robertson could be a transformative move for Buffalo, providing a premier talent to lead their scoring efforts, thus propelling them toward playoff contention for the first time since 2011.

Another interesting scenario could arise for the Toronto Maple Leafs, particularly if they lose forward Mitch Marner to free agency. The prospect of adding Robertson could help offset the loss of Marner, but challenges remain due to a lack of top prospects and first-round draft picks in the immediate future. Any deal would require creativity on the part of the Maple Leafs' management to navigate these obstacles.

The New York Islanders, under new management, may also consider acquiring Jason Robertson to bolster their scoring lineup. Trading right-handed defenseman Noah Dobson could be necessary for such a move. Adding Robertson alongside Mathew Barzal and Bo Horvat could provide the Islanders with a significant boost in offensive talent, a crucial step toward revitalizing their roster and rekindling fan interest after several uninspiring seasons.

The Detroit Red Wings, having experienced their own playoff drought, might view a trade for Robertson as a definitive measure to reinvigorate their prospects. General Manager Steve Yzerman seeks to enhance the roster after a promising season that fell short. With considerable prospects and picks available, including a core featuring players such as Dylan Larkin and Alex DeBrincat, a trade for Robertson could cement the team's trajectory toward playoff contention.

Finally, the Carolina Hurricanes illustrate a particularly intriguing case regarding Robertson's potential acquisition. Having previously expressed interest in securing a scoring winger, the Hurricanes' pursuit of names like Mikko Rantanen reflects their ongoing efforts. Re-engaging Dallas in discussions about Robertson would allow Carolina to capitalize on established trade relations and address their need for elite scoring talent as they prepare for the upcoming season.
