Diontae Johnson Joins Houston Texans Following Waiver Claim

Diontae Johnson has been claimed on waivers by the Houston Texans, marking his third team for the 2024 NFL season. This development was reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter on December 20th. The Texans' decision to acquire the veteran wide receiver comes in response to a significant knee injury suffered by Tank Dell during the team's recent loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
After being waived by the Baltimore Ravens, where Johnson had a brief and challenging stint, he now finds himself preparing to face his former team as the Texans are set to host the Ravens. Johnson's departure from Baltimore was the result of a mutual decision to excuse him from team activities following his suspension for refusing to enter a game in early December against the Philadelphia Eagles. Johnson had previously been acquired by the Ravens from the Carolina Panthers in exchange for a draft pick, intended to bolster a receiving corps that included notable players like Zay Flowers and Rashod Bateman.
Despite high expectations, Johnson's impact in Baltimore was minimal, as he registered just one catch over four games. The Texans' claim may present a low-risk opportunity for the team, especially given Johnson's upcoming free agency status after this season. With Dell and Stefon Diggs sidelined due to injuries, Houston is in need of additional depth at the wide receiver position. With the team already clinching the AFC South and preparing for a playoff appearance, acquiring Johnson could provide necessary support to the offensive lineup.
