Daniel Jones Signs with Minnesota Vikings After Giants Exit
Daniel Jones, recently released by the New York Giants, has found a new opportunity with the Minnesota Vikings. Jones is set to sign with the Vikings after prioritizing a team in contention, featuring a quarterback-friendly offensive system and a coaching staff that is recognized for maximizing player potential. Initially, he will join the Vikings' practice squad, according to reports from NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Cameron Wolfe, and Tom Pelissero.
Jones experienced a tumultuous week following the Giants' Week 11 bye. On November 18, Giants head coach Brian Daboll announced that Tommy DeVito would take over as the starting quarterback, with Drew Lock stepping in as the backup for the upcoming game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Just four days later, Giants president John Mara publicly confirmed that Jones had been granted his release after he requested it during a meeting with management. This decision marked the end of Jones' six-year tenure with the Giants, just 26 months after he had signed a four-year, $160 million contract in March 2023, which included a $23 million guarantee for 2025 in the event of a major injury this season.
Despite the opportunity to be claimed off waivers, it was considered unlikely that another team would do so given the approximately $12 million remaining on his contract for the 2023 season. Jones' career has been marked by challenges, particularly given his status as the No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Although he displayed potential in his rookie season with 3,027 passing yards and 24 touchdowns over 13 games, subsequent years were hampered by injuries. However, Jones rebounded in 2022, recording 3,205 passing yards, 708 rushing yards, and contributing to 22 touchdowns to help the Giants reach the playoffs. Yet, following the signing of his contract, Jones' performance deteriorated, with only 2,979 passing yards, 10 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions in 16 starts since the beginning of the 2023 season. His 46.3 QBR this season ranks 28th among 33 qualified quarterbacks. Nevertheless, there is optimism that in a more talent-rich environment with improved coaching, Jones may revitalize his career as he prepares for free agency in the offseason. The Vikings, enjoying a surprising season partly due to head coach Kevin O'Connell's efforts to enhance Sam Darnold's career, represent a promising setting for Jones. Darnold, who signed a one-year, $10 million contract, became the starter following rookie J.J. McCarthy's injury. With premier targets like Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and T.J. Hockenson, along with the dual-threat capabilities of running back Aaron Jones, the Vikings may provide the ideal circumstances for Jones to reclaim his form, particularly if Darnold encounters any setbacks.
