Dallas Stars Advance to Western Conference Finals After Overtime Victory

The Dallas Stars and Edmonton Oilers are set to face each other for the second consecutive time in the Western Conference Finals. On Saturday night, Thomas Harley scored in overtime, leading the Stars to a series-clinching 2-1 victory against the Winnipeg Jets in Game 6 of the 2025 Stanley Cup playoffs. With this win, the Stars will advance to compete against the Oilers, with a spot in the Stanley Cup Final at stake. The identity of their opponent in the Eastern Conference Finals, the Carolina Hurricanes, is yet to be determined.
The playoff matchup began with a challenging start for the Stars, as Tyler Seguin missed a prime scoring opportunity from an open net midway through the first period. Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, a Vezina Trophy candidate, showcased his skills, effectively neutralizing a barrage of shots from the Stars, resulting in a scoreless opening frame. The second period saw the Jets take the lead when Mark Scheifele scored, marking his first road goal of the playoffs. This achievement occurred just hours after he received the news of his father's passing, a situation evidenced by Jets head coach Scott Arniel's disclosure that Scheifele believed participating in Game 6 was what his father would have wanted.
In response, Sam Steel of the Stars equalized six minutes later, scoring his first goal of the postseason. The third period featured notable defensive plays, with Hellebuyck denying a close-range shot from Mikko Rantanen, while Stars goalie Jake Oettinger delivered an outstanding save, lunging across the net to thwart Mason Appleton's shot. As the game approached its conclusion, Steel drew a penalty with just 14.8 seconds remaining in regulation, granting the Stars a power play to begin overtime. Utilizing this advantage, Harley found the back of the net with a shot from the slot just 1:33 into the extra session. The Jets' loss was compounded by the absence of Josh Morrissey, who exited the game in the second period due to a collision. With this victory, the Stars have reached three consecutive conference finals, yet they have yet to compete for the Stanley Cup. Dallas will look to leverage their addition of Rantanen to break this trend against the Oilers in the upcoming rematch.
