Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is set to miss the remainder of the 2024 season. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones announced during an appearance on 105.3 The Fan's Shan & RJ show that Prescott will undergo season-ending surgery on his hamstring, scheduled for Wednesday. This injury marks another significant setback for the veteran quarterback, who sustained the hamstring injury during the Cowboys' Week 9 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons.
Following the injury, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Prescott was considering season-ending surgery on his partially torn hamstring, pending the evaluation of one final specialist. This injury is particularly concerning for Prescott, who faced a serious injury in the 2020 season that included a dislocation and compound fracture of his right ankle, limiting him to just five games. Although he missed five games again in 2022, Prescott managed to complete all 17 games in the 2023 season, demonstrating a strong performance with a completion rate of 69.5 percent, passing for 4,516 yards, achieving a league-leading 36 touchdowns, and registering nine interceptions. His performance was expected to set the stage for an impressive 2024 campaign, but the recent injury curtailed those aspirations after just eight games, resulting in a disappointing 3-5 record.
In the eight games played this season, Prescott completed 64.7 percent of his passes for 1,978 yards, recording 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions. The outlook for the Cowboys took a notable downturn following the hamstring injury, particularly considering their record and challenging position within the NFC East division. With Prescott sidelined, the Cowboys have turned to Cooper Rush as the starting quarterback in their recent loss to the Philadelphia Eagles and are likely to continue relying on him as they move forward. Rush, who has been with Dallas since the 2017 season, achieved a 4-1 record as a starter in 2022; however, expectations for him to replicate Prescott's production may be overly ambitious.
