Colts Field Trade Inquiries for Anthony Richardson Amid Quarterback Transition

The Indianapolis Colts have received inquiries from multiple NFL teams regarding the potential trade of quarterback Anthony Richardson, who was recently benched. According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, while there is interest from other teams, a trade for Richardson is deemed 'unlikely.'
Richardson, selected as the fourth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, has struggled during his initial six starts, recording a completion rate of just 44.4 percent, along with four touchdowns and seven interceptions. In light of these performances, the Colts have opted to start 17-year NFL veteran Joe Flacco in Richardson's place. This decision arrives amid a broader context where several teams, such as the New York Giants, Carolina Panthers, and Las Vegas Raiders, are grappling with uncertainties at the quarterback position.
Despite this shift, Colts head coach Shane Steichen emphasized that the choice to bench Richardson was driven by an immediate goal of winning games rather than a long-term shift away from the young quarterback. He stated, 'It's my obligation to 53 guys and to this organization to win football games. Tough decision, but one I felt was in the best interest of our football team. I feel Joe gives us the best chance to win right now. With that being said, not giving up on Anthony (Richardson) by any means.' Steichen's comments underline a focus on current performance while maintaining belief in Richardson's future potential. The Colts selected him with the understanding that he would need time to develop, given his limited starting experience at the University of Florida and his youth. The pressing issue remains Richardson's struggles with accuracy, which have been highlighted by his completion rate. As the Colts prepare for a pivotal matchup against the Minnesota Vikings, the considerations surrounding both Richardson's development and Flacco's leadership will continue to shape the team's approach moving forward.
