Cincinnati Reds Downplay Trade Rumors Surrounding Star Pitcher Hunter Greene

Reds' Front Office Hints at Stability for Hunter Greene Amid Trade Talks
The Cincinnati Reds have been the center of trade speculation this offseason, particularly concerning their promising starting pitcher Hunter Greene. However, Reds president of baseball operations Nick Krall recently addressed these rumors, indicating that Greene is likely to remain with the team.
During a press conference, Krall said, "Look, we're trying to do what's best for our team. I don't want to rule out anything, but that's a hard one to actually say, 'Hey, we're going to trade the guy that has a chance to be the ace of your staff and top-of-the-rotation guy going into the postseason.'" He confirmed that trading Greene is currently not being considered as the team looks to improve.
Greene, who is 26 years old, had a successful season with an impressive 2.76 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, and 132 strikeouts across 107.2 innings, finishing with a record of 7-4 in 19 starts. He is under a six-year, $53 million contract that extends through 2028, including a club option for 2029.
Despite his talent, Greene's career has been plagued by injuries, including missing two months in 2025 due to a right groin strain. Krall emphasized the importance of maintaining depth in the team’s rotation, noting, "It's hard to replace a starter. Every year we lose one or two starters, and we need to ensure we have the depth to cope with those losses.”
Last season, the Reds showcased one of the strongest pitching rotations in Major League Baseball, posting a 3.85 ERA which ranked ninth overall. This formidable rotation played a significant role in Cincinnati qualifying for the postseason for the first time since 2020.
As offseason strategies unfold, it appears that the Reds are keen on retaining their key players, particularly Greene, as they look to build on their recent successes.
