Chiefs Set for Backfield by Committee as Pacheco Returns
In anticipation of the upcoming AFC West showdown, the Kansas City Chiefs are preparing for a backfield by committee as running back Isiah Pacheco returns from a fractured fibula sustained during Week 2 against the Cincinnati Bengals. Pacheco's return will allow the Chiefs to incorporate him alongside Kareem Hunt, who has been performing admirably since signing with the team following Pacheco's injury.
Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy confirmed the plan to rotate Pacheco and Hunt during the game against the Las Vegas Raiders. He emphasized that having both players available not only keeps them fresh but also mitigates the risk of overburdening any single player, especially as the team aims for a strong playoff push. "The best part about that is you just don't have one where they're getting worn down by the time you get to the fourth quarter," Nagy remarked, highlighting the importance of managing player workloads situationally throughout the game.
While this development is beneficial for the Chiefs' overall performance and strategy, it poses challenges for fantasy football players. Pacheco had established himself as the leading running back prior to his injury, totaling 1,179 yards and nine touchdowns last season, and showing promise in the current season with an impressive start. However, Hunt's successful stint, totaling 577 rushing yards and five touchdowns over eight games, suggests that both players' fantasy outputs may be limited moving forward. As Kansas City aims for another Lombardi Trophy, the team's prioritization of health and depth in the backfield may not align with the desires of fantasy football managers.
