Bradley Beal Voluntarily Passes Jersey No. 3 to Chris Paul with Los Angeles Clippers

In a recent development, the competition for jersey number 3 between the two newest members of the Los Angeles Clippers has been amicably resolved. According to Moneyline's Ohm Youngmisuk, Bradley Beal has graciously agreed to allow Chris Paul to assume the jersey number he has worn since high school. As of now, Beal has not yet made a decision regarding which number he will wear for the upcoming 2025-26 NBA season.
Beal recently secured a two-year, $11 million contract with the Clippers following a buyout agreement with the Phoenix Suns on July 16. Meanwhile, Chris Paul surprised many by signing with the Clippers on Monday, marking his return to a franchise with which he spent six successful seasons from 2011 to 2017. This move is particularly notable as it may represent Paul's final year in the NBA. His return to Los Angeles aligns with the Clippers' aspirations for a championship in the 2025-26 season, although some may question the fit given the team's already crowded backcourt.
With the additions of Paul and Beal, the Clippers' backcourt now boasts a depth chart that includes Paul, Beal, James Harden, and Kris Dunn, creating a favorable situation for head coach Tyronn Lue. While jersey number decisions are typically not significant, this one allows Paul to maintain a level of continuity throughout his career. The number 3, along with his nickname CP3, pays homage to his family, as he is the third in line to carry the initials after his father, Charles Paul, and his older brother, CJ Paul. In contrast, Beal has worn number 3 for the entirety of his 13-season NBA career, having previously donned number 23 during his single college season at Florida in 2011-12, a choice influenced by his admiration for Dwyane Wade. If Beal considers returning to his former college number, he may need to negotiate with Patrick Baldwin Jr., who claimed number 23 upon joining the Clippers in March.
