Barry Sanders Advocates for Saquon Barkley as 2024 MVP
Barry Sanders, a Hall of Famer in the NFL, has voiced his belief that the 2024 MVP award should be awarded to Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley, along with recognition for his offensive line. Sanders referenced a moment from his own career, noting how in 1997, he rushed for an impressive 2,053 yards, and the MVP award was split between him and another player.
In a standout season, Barkley, at the age of 27, became only the ninth player in NFL history to surpass 2,000 rushing yards in a single season, finishing with a total of 2,005 yards. This remarkable achievement was accomplished over 16 games, as he rested during the regular-season finale against his former team, the New York Giants. Barkley also contributed significantly in the passing game, recording 33 receptions for 278 yards and tallying a total of 15 touchdowns.
The MVP award has evolved into an honor that predominantly recognizes quarterbacks, with notable performances from players such as Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, and Joe Burrow this season. As a result, Sanders’ aspiration for Barkley and his offensive line to receive the prestigious award may be an uphill battle. Nevertheless, it is undeniable that Barkley had an exceptional 2024 campaign.
