Ashton Jeanty Adapts His Backfield Stance Under Raiders Coaching Guidance

Las Vegas Raiders offensive coordinator Chip Kelly has provided insight into the development of rookie running back Ashton Jeanty, specifically regarding a requested alteration in his backfield stance. During a recent press briefing, Kelly clarified that he does not engage in coaching specific player positions, stating, 'I didn't tell anybody on this team to be in any stances.' However, it was indicated that running backs coach Deland McCullough suggested the adjustment.
Ashton Jeanty, who previously showcased a distinctive upright stance during his college tenure at Boise State, recounted a conversation with Kelly that took place during rookie minicamp. Jeanty noted that Kelly asked him about his basketball experience and prompted him to demonstrate his defensive stance, leading to a discussion about the importance of being in a proper running back stance. Despite his success in college, where he finished second in Heisman Trophy voting, Jeanty has expressed willingness to adapt his stance in accordance with the coaching staff's advice, although he remains open to returning to his original posture in the future.
Jeanty concluded an impressive junior season by leading the nation in rushing yards with 2,601 on 374 attempts, contributing to 30 total touchdowns in 14 games while averaging 7.0 yards per carry. Although Kelly has not been the primary influence behind Jeanty's stance modification, he emphasized the running back's adaptability and potential versatility within the offense, stating, 'He's awesome and he's such a coachable guy that you can do a lot of things with him.' As Jeanty aims to invigorate a Raiders offense that struggled with rushing in the previous season, his development will be closely monitored.
