Aidan Hutchinson Cleared for Offseason Activities with the Detroit Lions

Aidan Hutchinson will be available for all of the Detroit Lions' offseason activities leading up to training camp. The 24-year-old defensive end informed reporters that he has been fully cleared to return from the fractured fibula and tibia that curtailed his 2024 season after just six games. The injury occurred during the third quarter of Detroit's dominant 47-9 victory over the Dallas Cowboys on October 13.
Initially, there was a plan for Hutchinson to make a return for the Super Bowl if the Lions had advanced that far. His injury marked the beginning of a series of setbacks that severely impacted the Lions' defense throughout the season. The team ultimately finished the year with 16 players on injured reserve, with 13 coming from the defensive unit. The significant losses in defensive personnel contributed to the Lions' 45-31 defeat against the Washington Commanders in the NFC Divisional Round.
Despite the disappointing conclusion to the 2024 season, Hutchinson has consistently provided optimistic updates regarding his recovery. He stated in April that he was feeling 'good' and nearing the completion of his rehabilitation process. His announcement on Thursday may carry multiple implications for the Lions, signaling not only that their premier defensive player is ready for action, but also that he is eligible for a contract extension for the first time this offseason. Lions president Rod Wood previously commented to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press that he had 'no comment' regarding negotiations with Hutchinson's representatives but assured fans that the Pro Bowler 'will be here for the long haul,' regardless of when a deal is finalized. Before his injury, Hutchinson was having a season considered worthy of Defensive Player of the Year, recording 17 quarterback hits, 7.5 sacks, and seven tackles for loss in just five games. The timing of Hutchinson's announcement is critical, coming six days before the Lions are set to commence organized team activities (OTAs) on May 28.
