Aidan Hutchinson Cleared for Offseason Activities with Lions

Aidan Hutchinson is set to participate in all of the Detroit Lions' offseason activities leading up to training camp. On Thursday, the 24-year-old defensive standout informed reporters that he has been fully cleared to return from the fractured fibula and tibia that derailed his 2024 season after just six games.
Hutchinson's injury occurred during the third quarter of the Lions' convincing 47-9 victory over the Dallas Cowboys on October 13. Although a plan was in place for his potential return for the Super Bowl had the Lions advanced that far, Hutchinson's injury marked the beginning of a series of ailments that plagued the Lions' defense throughout the season. The team ultimately finished the year with 16 players on injured reserve, 13 of whom were defensive players, significantly impacting their performance. This lack of depth on defense contributed to the Lions' 45-31 defeat to the Washington Commanders in the NFC Divisional Round.
Despite the disappointing conclusion to the 2024 season, Hutchinson remained optimistic and provided positive updates regarding his recovery. He indicated in April that he was feeling 'good' and nearing the completion of his rehabilitation process. This recent announcement also carries multiple implications for the Lions. With Hutchinson's readiness to return, the team is aware that their best defensive player is available, and he is also eligible for a contract extension for the first time this offseason. Lions president Rod Wood mentioned to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press last month that he had 'no comment' regarding negotiations with Hutchinson's representatives, but assured that the Pro Bowler 'will be here for the long haul' regardless of the timing of any deal. Prior to his injury, Hutchinson was having a season that positioned him as a candidate for the Defensive Player of the Year award, boasting 17 quarterback hits, 7.5 sacks, and seven tackles for loss in just five games. His announcement comes just six days before the Lions are scheduled to commence organized team activities (OTAs) on May 28.
