Sports betting became legal in Virginia in April 2020, and the initial wagers were made in January 2021. This followed Governor Ralph Northam's approval of bill SB 384 on April 29, 2020, after it underwent multiple amendments in the Virginia State Legislature. In 2021, the Virginia Lottery issued a sports betting license to the Washington Football Team, marking the first occasion an NFL team had been granted a license related to wagering.
