Is online sports betting legal in California? No, sports betting is not currently legal in California. In the November 2022 ballot, two sports betting measures were decisively rejected by voters. Here is a closer look at each proposal:
1. Proposition 26: The California Proposition 26, known as the "Legalize Sports Betting on American Indian Lands Initiative," was supported by tribal interests with the goal of legalizing in-person betting at over 80 tribal casinos and horse racing tracks. Additionally, it sought to allow roulette and craps at tribal gaming establishments. As it stands, California casinos are limited to offering only slot machines, lottery games, and certain card games.
2. Proposition 27: The "California Solutions to Homelessness and Mental Health Support Act," also known as Proposition 27, aimed to legalize statewide online sports wagering. This initiative had the support of seven major national sports betting operators in the U.S., including Bally's, BetMGM, DraftKings, FanDuel, Penn National, WynnBET, and Fanatics (rumored to be involved in an acquisition). The online sports betting proposal promised to allocate 85% of sports betting tax revenue to a new fund dedicated to addressing homelessness and mental health issues. Furthermore, this Act required online sportsbooks launching in California to partner with tribal casinos.
