Warriors Secure Key Signings: Gary Payton II, Ae'Anthony Melton, and Will Richard Join the Roster

Warriors Bolster Roster with Recent Signings
The Golden State Warriors are making significant moves this offseason as they announce the signings of guard Gary Payton II and Ae'Anthony Melton, along with second-round pick Will Richard, to multi-year deals. According to ESPN's Shams Charania, this strategic reinforcement comes on the heels of Al Horford's decision to join the Warriors after his tenure with the Boston Celtics.
This will mark Gary Payton II's return to Golden State, where he previously played during the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons. He was re-acquired in a trade from the Portland Trail Blazers at the 2023 trade deadline. Payton's return was initially uncertain, as a source had reported it looked “doubtful” he would re-sign. However, he ultimately chose to stay with the Warriors, continuing to provide vital depth to a squad led by stars like Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler, and Draymond Green.
During the 2024-25 season, Payton appeared in 62 games—11 of which were as a starter—averaging 6.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game. He showcased his efficiency, boasting a shooting percentage of 57.4% from the field. Unfortunately, his season was marred by a torn ligament in his left thumb that hindered his performance late in the year. He was, however, active during the Warriors' playoff run, although his contributions were minimal as the team was eliminated by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the conference semifinals.
Payton, who entered the league undrafted in 2016, has had a solid nine-year career, also spending time with teams like the Milwaukee Bucks, Los Angeles Lakers, and Washington Wizards. He was part of the Warriors' championship-winning team in 2022, displaying remarkable shooting skills during the postseason.
With the Warriors finishing the previous season seventh in the Western Conference with a 48-34 record, securing Payton aims to enhance their chances of competing for another NBA championship in the upcoming season. His experience and skill as a reliable bench player will be crucial for the team's aspirations.
