Celtics' Jayson Tatum Remains Hopeful for 2025-26 Season Return Amid Achilles Injury Recovery

Jayson Tatum's Road to Recovery
Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum may not be sidelined for the entire 2025-26 season as he recovers from a torn Achilles. During a recent appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, ESPN's Shams Charania revealed that the Celtics have not ruled Tatum out. "I think the Celtics are cautiously optimistic. Clearly, Jayson Tatum has a goal in his mind that he wants to play," Charania stated at the 1:08 mark of the broadcast.
Tatum sustained the injury during Boston's second-round playoff exit against the New York Knicks on May 12. Given the lengthy recovery period common with Achilles injuries, it was initially presumed that he would miss the upcoming season. Charania noted that other players, like Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton and Portland Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard, are expected to miss the full season due to similar injuries.
Progress in Recovery
However, signs point to Tatum being ahead in his recovery. Last month, he shared a video of himself working out on the court, which garnered a supportive response from fellow NBA star Kevin Durant. Durant has experience with Achilles injuries, having ruptured his tendon in Game 5 of the 2019 NBA Finals, leading to a full season out of play.
The Celtics promptly announced that Tatum underwent surgery the day following his injury, which could contribute to a quicker return. In an interview on First Take, Tatum expressed, "First thing, I haven't said I'm not playing this season. The most important thing is a full recovery. And I'm not rushing it ... at all. But also, I don't go to rehab six days a week for nothing."
Impact on the Celtics
Getting Tatum back would significantly enhance the Celtics' fortunes, especially after they lost key players like Kristaps Porziņģis, Jrue Holiday, and Al Horford in the offseason. The team faces challenges in maintaining competitiveness in the Eastern Conference playoff picture, and Tatum’s return could provide a much-needed lift. Yet the Celtics will likely be cautious with his health, ensuring they don’t bring him back too soon if the team struggles.
As it stands, while Tatum faces a challenging road ahead, the Celtics are keeping their options open for his potential return this season.
