Travis Hunters Dual Role Expectations for the 2025 NFL Season

Travis Hunter, a rookie for the Jacksonville Jaguars, has been officially listed as the team's starting wide receiver and second-string cornerback on the first unofficial depth chart for the 2025 season, according to reports from ESPN's Adam Schefter. Jaguars head coach Liam Coen has previously indicated that Hunter will be given opportunities to play both positions during training camp, reflecting the dual-threat capabilities he showcased in his impressive 2024 season at the University of Colorado.
Coach Coen expressed his belief that the 22-year-old Hunter could potentially secure both the Defensive Rookie of the Year and Offensive Rookie of the Year honors, suggesting that his role in the regular season may involve significant contributions from both positions. 'I do think it’s possible,' Coen stated during a recent appearance on the Rich Eisen Show. 'He is committed, man. Like, he is committed to driving, not just himself, but his teammates as well. These guys are challenging him every single day. He doesn’t get a free pass because he was the second overall pick and he’s Travis Hunter.'
The Jaguars have high expectations for Hunter, having traded up to select him with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. His remarkable college career included Heisman Trophy honors, accumulating 96 receptions for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns, along with 36 tackles, 11 passes defensed, and four interceptions on defense. Given his draft status, Hunter was anticipated to take on a starting role in his rookie season. He is projected to join Brian Thomas Jr. and Dyami Brown in the Jaguars' starting offense while also competing to ascend the cornerback depth chart during the preseason against Jarrian Jones and Montaric Brown.
