Keenan Allen Returns to Chargers After One Season with Bears

Free agent wide receiver Keenan Allen has rejoined the Los Angeles Chargers after a brief tenure with the Chicago Bears, the team announced on Tuesday. The terms of the contract were reported by Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Last season, the 33-year-old Allen recorded 70 receptions for 744 yards and seven touchdowns while playing for the Bears. A six-time Pro Bowler, Allen spent his first 11 NFL seasons with the Chargers.
Selected in the third round out of Cal, Allen enjoyed a successful career, which included five seasons with over 100 catches and five 1,000-yard campaigns. His most productive season was the last one he spent with the Chargers, where he accumulated 108 receptions for 1,243 yards and seven touchdowns in just 13 games, although he missed the last month due to a heel injury. Despite over a decade in the league, Allen has demonstrated that he still possesses significant skills and productivity.
The decision to part ways with the Chargers came after Allen declined to accept a pay cut and restructure his contract, coupled with the impending $5 million roster bonus he was set to receive in March. Facing significant salary cap issues for the upcoming 2024 offseason, the Chargers traded Allen to the Bears for a fourth-round draft pick. At that time, he had one year remaining on a four-year, $45 million contract extension. The Bears were in the process of rebuilding and aimed to provide support for their future franchise quarterback, who was ultimately selected as USC's Caleb Williams with their No. 1 overall pick. In a welcome press conference, Allen expressed enthusiasm about remaining with Chicago beyond the 2024 season. However, his time in Chicago was short-lived, and he now returns to Los Angeles, where he will bolster the Chargers' wide receiver corps following the retirement of Mike Williams. Allen joins a unit that also features promising second-year player Ladd McConkey, who had an impressive rookie season, alongside newly drafted rookie Tre Harris from Ole Miss. As a seasoned veteran, Allen is expected to serve as a reliable resource and chain-mover for quarterback Justin Herbert, contributing to the team's efforts to build on their successful 11-win season under head coach Jim Harbaugh.
