Tampa Bay Rays Sign Ha-Seong Kim to Two-Year Contract
The Tampa Bay Rays have reportedly secured their next shortstop by agreeing to a two-year contract worth $29 million with Ha-Seong Kim, as reported by ESPN's Jeff Passan. The deal includes an opt-out clause after the first year, providing both flexibility and potential for the organization.
Kim, who is currently recovering from shoulder surgery, is expected to make his return to the field in May. The 29-year-old previously played four seasons with the San Diego Padres, where he showcased a versatile skill set. His defensive prowess is particularly noteworthy, having won a Gold Glove in 2023 and accumulating 24 defensive runs saved above average at shortstop, according to FanGraphs. Although he played shortstop exclusively in 2024, Kim demonstrated effectiveness in multiple infield positions, also adding 15 defensive runs saved at second base and nine at third base during his tenure in San Diego.
In addition to his defensive capabilities, Kim is recognized for his speed on the basepaths, having stolen 22 bases in the preceding season, following a notable 38 steals the year before. While his offensive contributions may not match his speed and defensive skills, he has consistently hit double-digit home runs over the past three seasons. In 2024, he appeared in 121 games, posting a slash line of .233/.330/.370 with 11 home runs and 47 RBIs. As Tampa Bay seeks to regain its competitive edge after missing the playoffs in 2024 for the first time since 2018, the addition of a versatile player like Kim is expected to bolster their performance, particularly in anchoring the middle of the defensive infield.
