The 2026 MLB season is swiftly approaching its conclusion, with playoff contenders ramping up their strategies for the postseason while also-rans eagerly turn their sights to next year. A pivotal offseason looms, especially with a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) expiration and a potential lockout on the horizon. However, for our discussion, we’re assuming a smooth transition to the 2027 season, focusing on potential Opening Day starting lineups for each team.

Arizona Diamondbacks

Projected leaders include shortstop Geraldo Perdomo and outfield sensation Corbin Carroll. Behind the plate, Gabriel Moreno will look to solidify his role as the primary catcher. Other key names are Nolan Arenado at third base and Ketel Marte at first base, with plans to possibly designate Marte as the permanent DH amid logjam concerns. Rising prospect Demetrio Crisantes at second gives a fresh approach as he transitions into the lineup.

Oakland Athletics

The A's may be turning the page with names like Henry Bolte and Nick Kurtz expected to contribute significantly in their lineup. Zack Gelof is anticipated to bounce back and clinch a starting position, likely shuffling either to second or third base, while the team seeks a low-cost addition for the infield. Their 2027 squad might not drastically vary from this year, but targeted signings could enhance performance.

Atlanta Braves

An intriguing mix of players could define the Braves’ 2027 squad. Ronald Acuña Jr. and Matt Olson lead the charge, with Austin Riley and Ozzie Albies anchoring the infield. A critical need arises for a solid shortstop, and the Braves might pursue J.P. Crawford if both Maurico Dubón and Ha-Seong Kim decide to test free agency.

New York Mets

With Pete Alonso still holding down first base, the infield also welcomes Gunnar Henderson at shortstop and Samuel Basallo behind the plate. Buzz will surround how prospects like Coby Mayo can carve out roles within the lineup. Options at the designated hitter spot also provide flexibility.

Detroit Tigers

The Tigers, bolstered by the powerhouse presence of Rafael Devers, will see transformation in their lineup as well. With strong players like Max Clark in the outfield and a functional infield with players like Gleyber Torres, a well-rounded squad appears forming.

Houston Astros

The Astros look to maintain their championship caliber with a projected lineup featuring the likes of Yordan Alvarez and Carlos Correa. Issues remain around healthy pitching depth and resolving the outfield position, particularly if Yordan Alvarez opts to spend much of his time as the DH.

San Diego Padres

Star power is abundant in San Diego with Fernando Tatis Jr. and Xander Bogaerts leading a strong lineup. However, sectional upgrades, especially in left field and overall hitting consistency, will be crucial. The question remains if they can find that stability going into the new season.

Seattle Mariners

With Julio Rodríguez as a cornerstone of their offense and other promising talents like Trent Grisham, adding consistency will be vital. The Mariners might seek to replace departing player J.P. Crawford and shore up the rotation with critical additions.

Conclusion

This early prediction exercise shines a light on where teams stand as of now, and what the 2027 MLB season could potentially look like. Crucial decisions lay ahead in free agency, roster construction, and managing player performances. Each franchise certainly hopes to step forward, gain competitive edges, and maximally utilize their offseason for effective team building.
