Michael Malone Endorses Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for NBA MVP

During a recent appearance on ESPN's postgame coverage, Michael Malone, the former head coach of Nikola Jokić, expressed a strong belief that Shai Gilgeous-Alexander deserves the NBA Most Valuable Player award for the 2024-25 season. Malone made his comments in the context of analyzing the Oklahoma City Thunder's commanding 114-88 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals.
Gilgeous-Alexander, who has emerged as a dominant force for the Thunder, showcased his MVP credentials during the game, particularly in the second half after overcoming initial struggles. He concluded the matchup with impressive statistics, including 31 points, nine assists, five rebounds, and three steals. His ability to draw fouls at the free-throw line, execute midrange jumpers, and navigate past defenders to finish at the rim were pivotal in overwhelming a formidable Minnesota defense. Moreover, his adeptness at facilitating plays when faced with defensive doubles helped the Thunder seize momentum in the third quarter, establishing a 1-0 series lead.
Malone's endorsement of Gilgeous-Alexander is noteworthy, especially considering his history with Jokić, whom he coached for the entirety of the star center's ten-year career with the Denver Nuggets until his dismissal just before the playoffs. Jokić's achievements include three MVP awards, and he is expected to be Gilgeous-Alexander’s primary competitor for the title this season. Earlier in the year, Malone had passionately advocated for Jokić, stating that if one compared the statistical performances of two players—one averaging a triple-double and excelling in major statistical categories—there would be no doubt regarding the MVP designation. However, now that Malone is no longer associated with the Nuggets, his stance appears to have shifted, signaling potential acceptance if Gilgeous-Alexander secures the award over Jokić.
