The New York Mets have reportedly agreed to re-sign first baseman Pete Alonso to a two-year, $54 million deal, ensuring that a fan favorite remains in the lineup. The contract, which is pending a physical, includes an opt-out clause after the first season, with Alonso set to earn $30 million in 2025. This agreement marks a significant move for the organization as they look to solidify their roster for the upcoming seasons.
With Alonso's return, the Mets are building a formidable lineup that features not only him but also stars like Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto. The team's projected batting order for 2025 showcases an impressive collection of talent, suggesting that the Mets aim to compete at a high level in the near future.
As the Mets prepare for the 2025 season, their payroll is expected to reach approximately $322 million, which puts them just behind the Los Angeles Dodgers. Alonso's new deal increases the projected tax payroll, but the team's luxury tax bill is anticipated to be significantly lower than that of the Dodgers. After a successful run that concluded with an NLCS appearance, the Mets have made a concerted effort to enhance their roster. In addition to Alonso, they have recently signed A.J. Minter, Clay Holmes, and Frankie Montas, while also re-signing Sean Manea, Ryne Stanek, and Jesse Winker.
