The National Football League (NFL) and its ownership appear to be increasingly interested in the possibility of transitioning to an 18-game regular season. However, this potential shift has not garnered support from the players, many of whom have vocalized their discontent regarding the proposal. NFL Players Association Executive Director Lloyd Howell Jr. articulated the players' concerns during a recent press conference, stating, "No one wants to play an 18th game. No one." He further expressed that the current 17-game schedule is already taxing for many athletes, often leading to injuries that extend into the following season.
Players from various teams have echoed Howell's sentiments. For instance, Austin Ekeler, a running back for the Washington Commanders, described the thought of adding another game as "really outrageous". While he clarified he was not speaking on behalf of the NFLPA, his personal view underscores a widespread unease among the player base regarding increased game demands. Additionally, Houston Texans backup quarterback Case Keenum reflected on the physical toll of the current season, noting that the training room is often crowded as players work to recover from injuries. He suggested that now may not be the appropriate time to discuss adding another game to the schedule.
The NFL's interest in an 18-game season can be attributed to various commercial benefits, including increased television ratings and a more lucrative television rights negotiation. However, players view the additional game as a significant health risk that would exacerbate the already demanding nature of their profession. Howell indicated that Commissioner Roger Goodell is attempting to present a favorable narrative surrounding the potential advantages of an expanded schedule. Nonetheless, he asserted that when it comes to protecting players, there is a palpable skepticism about these supposed benefits. While discussions regarding regular-season expansion have occurred, formal negotiations between the NFL and players have yet to take place, leaving the future of the NFL schedule uncertain.
