New York Yankees Lose Gleyber Torres to Detroit Tigers

Following their appearance in the World Series, the New York Yankees will be seeking a replacement for a crucial aspect of their lineup. Infielder Gleyber Torres and the Detroit Tigers reached an agreement for a one-year contract for the 2025 season, valued at approximately $15 million, as reported by Jesse Rogers of ESPN.
Torres had previously played the 2024 season on a one-year, $14.2 million deal after successfully avoiding arbitration. Despite expressing his desire to remain with the Yankees for the long term — stating in February, 'I want to be a Yankee for life' — the organization opted not to retain him after a strong finish to the year. During the 2024 campaign, Torres appeared in 154 regular-season games, achieving a batting average of .257 alongside 15 home runs and 63 runs batted in. His performance notably improved after the All-Star break, where he was transitioned to the leadoff position in the Yankees' batting order, posting a .292 average for the second half of the season. In the postseason, he contributed by hitting .241 with two home runs and eight RBIs, although the Yankees were ultimately defeated in five games by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series.
Having spent two-and-a-half years developing in the Chicago Cubs' farm system, Torres was traded to the Yankees in 2016, making his Major League debut in 2018. He quickly made an impact, earning back-to-back All-Star selections in his first two seasons. However, the 28-year-old's performance began to plateau, leading to speculation about his effectiveness at second base and igniting trade rumors. Torres rebounded in the second half of the 2024 season and during the playoffs, demonstrating that he remains capable of being a significant contributor in the right environment. Over the course of his career, Torres has maintained a .265/.334/.441 slash line in 888 games, with totals of 138 home runs, 441 RBIs, 460 runs scored, and 53 stolen bases. By signing with the Tigers, he will be bringing valuable experience and postseason acumen to a team that made notable strides in the 2024 season, reaching the American League Division Series. Torres will join a promising lineup alongside emerging talents such as Riley Greene and Colt Keith as Detroit aims for a playoff spot in 2025. Meanwhile, the Yankees will need to address the vacancy at either second base or third base, contingent on their plans for Jazz Chisholm in the upcoming season.
