New York Giants Commit to Russell Wilson as Starting Quarterback Ahead of 2025 Season

The New York Giants have announced their commitment to Russell Wilson as the starting quarterback for the upcoming 2025 season, as confirmed by head coach Brian Daboll during a press conference on Wednesday. Daboll stated, 'These guys will be out here competing, but Russ is our starter,' reinforcing the team's confidence in Wilson's abilities to lead the offense.
As the Giants prepare for training camp, which commenced on Wednesday in East Rutherford, New Jersey, veteran quarterback Jameis Winston and 2025 first-round pick Jaxson Dart have emerged as the leading candidates to serve as backups to Wilson. Third-year backup Tommy DeVito is also in contention for a position on the 53-man roster, adding depth to the quarterback room as competition heats up.
When questioned about Dart's chances of surpassing Winston to assume the QB2 role, Daboll opted not to provide a definitive answer. He emphasized the importance of development, stating, 'To get better every day' is the primary goal for Dart. Giants general manager Joe Schoen addressed the concept of redshirting rookie quarterbacks, citing the successful development of Patrick Mahomes with the Kansas City Chiefs. Schoen acknowledged that while resting quarterbacks can have benefits, circumstances may necessitate an earlier start, pointing out that during his tenure with the Buffalo Bills, plans to delay Josh Allen's debut changed when he was called upon in Week 1 of his rookie season in 2018. With the Giants' focus on Wilson and Winston, there remains hope for Dart's development throughout the upcoming season, regardless of the outcome of the training camp competition. Training camp continues through August 13, and if the QB2 spot remains undetermined by August 9, Winston, Dart, and DeVito may continue their battle during the team’s preseason opener against the Buffalo Bills.
