Minnesota Twins Ownership Decision Shocks Potential Buyers Amid Fan Discontent

Pohlad Family Stuns Buyers by Retaining Minnesota Twins Ownership
In a surprising turn of events, the Pohlad family has decided to maintain ownership of the Minnesota Twins, leaving at least one potential buyer feeling blindsided. Reported by Dan Hayes and Brittany Ghiroli of The Athletic, this decision comes after a period of growing fan discontent regarding the team's direction and performance.
Sources indicate that the family’s announcement, delivered in a letter on Wednesday, serves as a “swift pivot” to address the frustrations of disappointed fans amidst the ongoing season troubles. The family has emphasized that while they will remain the principal owners, they are actively adding two significant limited partnership groups to their ownership structure.
Just ten months ago, the Pohlads publicized their intention to sell the team, initially believed to be worth around $1.7 billion. The shocking decision means that potential buyers may have to reconsider their aspirations of entering Major League Baseball ownership, facing challenges with securing financing for a purchase that may no longer be on the table.
Fan discontent has been on the rise, particularly after the Twins traded away 10 players ahead of the July 31 deadline, in addition to a mandated payroll reduction last year. With a current record of 57-63, the team is languishing in fourth place in the American League Central and is on track to achieve its lowest attendance at Target Field in 16 seasons.
While the Twins secured a playoff spot in 2023 and finished 2024 with a winning record, optimism for future seasons is waning amidst their recent struggles. As the franchise continues to seek its first World Series title since 1991, today's announcement could signal a challenging road ahead for the organization and its fans.
