Cubs' Top Prospect Owen Caissie Set to Make MLB Debut Against Blue Jays

Chicago Cubs Ready to Unleash New Talent
The Chicago Cubs are making a significant move as they approach the final stretch of the 2025 season by adding firepower to their lineup. Owen Caissie, recognized as the Cubs' No. 1 prospect, is set to make his MLB debut in Thursday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays. Caissie will take on the role of designated hitter, batting fifth in the order.
A Promising Journey
Owen Caissie, a Burlington, Ontario native, was acquired by the Cubs in December 2020 as part of the trade deal that sent star pitcher Yu Darvish to the San Diego Padres. Now, nearly five years later, Caissie is ready to showcase his skills just 35 miles from his hometown.
This season, Caissie has shown his prowess at the plate during his time with Triple-A Iowa, playing in 93 games where he posted a solid .289 batting average with 22 home runs and 52 RBIs. He has been particularly impressive in recent weeks, with MLB.com’s Jim Callis noting that he hit an impressive .383 over his last 17 games. Callis also highlighted Caissie’s status as one of the best power-hitting prospects in all of baseball.
Impact on the Cubs’ Playoff Push
Caissie's arrival comes at a crucial time for the Cubs, who are striving to secure a National League wild-card spot and achieve their first playoff berth since 2020. Currently, the Cubs rank second in the NL Central with a record of 68-51; however, a recent 4-6 stretch has seen them fall behind the division-leading Milwaukee Brewers by 7.5 games.
In addition, the Cubs have been struggling offensively, managing to score just 33 runs in their last 10 games. Caissie’s injection into the lineup is expected to provide the necessary spark to reignite their offense.
Challenging First Game
However, Caissie won’t have an easy start to his big-league career, as he faces a tough challenge against the Blue Jays. Toronto is sending future Hall of Famer Max Scherzer to the mound for Thursday’s game, while the Cubs will rely on Matthew Boyd, who ranks fourth in MLB with a 2.45 ERA.
As fans gear up for this exciting debut, all eyes will be on Owen Caissie to see if he can help lead the Cubs to postseason contention.
