Mets' Playoff Hopes Dwindle After Loss to Marlins as Tiebreaker Looms

Mets Face Uphill Battle for Playoffs
As the 2025 MLB regular season nears its conclusion, the New York Mets find themselves in a precarious situation following a disappointing 6-2 loss to the Miami Marlins on Friday night. With only two days remaining in the season, the team is in dire need of assistance to secure a playoff spot.
After the game, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza addressed the media, acknowledging the reality of their situation. "We put ourselves in this position," Mendoza said, noting the slim chances of making the postseason even if the Mets win their final two games. "Here we are. We've got to come back tomorrow and the next day now. We've got to win the next two and see what happens," he added.
Playoff Picture Tightens
The Mets' loss coincided with the Cincinnati Reds' 3-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers, resulting in both teams now holding identical 82-78 records. However, the Reds currently possess the tiebreaker advantage, positioning them to capture the final wild card spot in the National League.
The Mets' performance has severely declined in recent months. After boasting a season-high 21 games above .500 on June 12 with a record of 45-24, they have since been in a downward spiral, going 37-53 over their last 91 games. This alarming slump has placed them among the worst performing teams in the league, only ahead of the Colorado Rockies, Minnesota Twins, Washington Nationals, and Chicago White Sox during that stretch.
Notably, just a few weeks ago on September 5, the Mets were tied with the San Diego Padres for the two available wild card spots, while the Reds were languishing in ninth place, six games behind the Mets and Padres.
Critical Games Ahead
Heading into Saturday's matchup, the Mets' playoff hopes are hanging by a thread. A loss for New York combined with a win for Cincinnati would ensure that the Reds clinch the final wild card spot, putting an end to the Mets' postseason aspirations. Such an outcome would be particularly disheartening, considering the lofty expectations placed on the team at the beginning of the season and the promising start they had. As the stakes rise, the Mets must find a way to rally if they hope to keep their playoff dreams alive.
