Los Angeles Lakers Consider Onyeka Okongwu Trade Before Deadline

The Los Angeles Lakers engaged in discussions regarding a significant trade involving Onyeka Okongwu of the Atlanta Hawks before the February trade deadline. According to a report from ESPN's Dave McMenamin on the Straight Fire podcast with Jason McIntyre, the Lakers 'made a call' to the Hawks concerning the young center. This inquiry occurred prior to the Lakers' attempt to acquire Mark Williams from the Charlotte Hornets, a deal ultimately rescinded before its official announcement.
Onyeka Okongwu, a 6'10" center with an ability to be a lob threat and exhibit defensive skills in the paint, could have complemented Luka Dončić well. While not a superstar by typical standards, Okongwu would have addressed a crucial positional need for the Lakers at center, especially following their struggles against the Minnesota Timberwolves during the playoffs. Additionally, Okongwu's age—turning just 25 in December—aligns well with the Lakers' current trajectory, as they look to build around Dončić as a cornerstone player. His contract, which includes three years remaining at a reasonable $47.98 million, further enhances his appeal.
The Hawks' decision to promote Okongwu as their starting center over Clint Capela in January likely contributed to their reluctance to enter discussions about a trade. The Hawks are currently navigating their strategy following two consecutive seasons without playoff appearances, and they have not eclipsed 43 wins since the 2015-16 season. Should the Hawks consider a short-term rebuild, Okongwu would stand out as one of their most valuable assets due to his age, contract status, and recent improvement in performance, as evidenced by his career highs this season with an average of 13.9 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game over 74 games. As for the Lakers, they are expected to actively seek a starting center this summer after Jaxson Hayes had limited impact during their postseason campaign.
