Kawhi Leonard's Troubled Relationship with Clippers Medical Staff Exposed

Unraveling the Tension Between Kawhi Leonard and Clippers Medical Team
A recent report by ESPN’s Baxter Holmes reveals a troubling "schism" between NBA superstar Kawhi Leonard and the medical staff of the Los Angeles Clippers. This divide is highlighted by the injuries that have prevented Leonard from participating in more than half of the Clippers' games over the past six seasons.
According to sources, Leonard maintained a distance from the Clippers' medical personnel, leading to significant frustration within the department. A former staff member noted, "It was like the Clippers' medical staff wasn't really allowed to touch Kawhi ever," a situation that created considerable angst.
Kawhi's Conditions Upon Signing
When Leonard signed with the Clippers in 2019, his camp, led by his uncle Dennis Robertson, reportedly requested that the team refrain from commenting on his health unless absolutely necessary. This was indicative of Leonard's negative experience with the San Antonio Spurs, where his relationship had soured partly due to the public handling of his injuries.
In 2018, reports surfaced revealing that Leonard's representatives disagreed with the Spurs' characterization of an injury that kept him sidelined for most of the 2017-18 season. Since joining the Clippers, the scrutiny over Leonard's health has persisted, notably when he withdrew from Team USA during the training camp for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Recent Developments and Legal Issues
Leading up to the 2024-25 season, the Clippers' communication about Leonard's availability has been unclear, with head coach Ty Lue later confirming that Leonard would be out indefinitely. He did not make his debut until January 4. Compounding the team's difficulties, former Clippers staffer Randy Shelton filed a lawsuit claiming wrongful termination and alleging that the team mishandled Leonard's recovery while failing to fully disclose his injuries. The team has denied these allegations and sought arbitration.
Adding to the drama, the NBA is currently investigating the Clippers following allegations linked to Leonard's endorsement deal with a now-bankrupt company tied to Clippers governor Steve Ballmer, suggesting potential salary cap violations. Despite these challenges, the Clippers issued a statement acknowledging Leonard’s struggles with injuries while expressing appreciation for his diligence and work ethic.
Looking Ahead
As Leonard, who turned 34 in May, continues to navigate his injury history, he holds two years on a lucrative contract set to pay him $50 million next season. The Clippers remain hopeful as they prepare for the upcoming training camp.
