Justin Fields Responds to Woody Johnson's Criticism Amidst Struggling Jets Season

Fields Addresses Johnson's Public Critique
Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields has publicly responded to New York Jets owner Woody Johnson's recent criticism. Johnson, who defended head coach Aaron Glenn amidst the team's challenging 0-7 record, pointedly stated, "It's hard when you have a quarterback with a rating that he's got. I mean, he has ability, but something just is not jiving."
In light of the remarks, Fields shared with reporters that he does not have a personal relationship with Johnson. Johnson's comments came during a press briefing, where he emphasized that consistency is key for a quarterback, adding, "You have to play consistently at that position, and that's what we're going to try to do for the remainder of the season."
Team Dynamics and Player Performance
Glenn addressed Johnson’s remarks during a team meeting and held a private discussion with Fields. He acknowledged the owner’s right to express his views, stating, "That comment was actually said by a number of guys, including our quarterback, as far as the efficiency of how we play. We're not going to fight that. We understand that we have to get better."
Glenn further emphasized unity within the team, assuring that they are aligned in their goals, saying, "So I'm glad we're on the same page on that, even with our quarterbacks. So we're just fine with that." The public criticism from an owner is a rare occurrence in the NFL, particularly midseason.
Fields has faced significant challenges throughout the season, having thrown for 845 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions in six games. He has a completion rate of 63.7 percent but has also been sacked 22 times, the second most among quarterbacks. His performance has dipped recently, as he has only managed to complete 15 of 29 passes for just 91 yards over the past two weeks. To compound matters, the Jets have scored only 17 points in their last two losses.
There are concerns among players regarding how Johnson’s comments might impact team morale, especially if they need to turn back to Fields as the starting quarterback. With Tyrod Taylor's knee injury classified as day-to-day, the situation remains uncertain.
