Jonathan Kuminga Signs Two-Year Deal with Warriors After Tense Negotiations

Contract Signed Amid Controversial Negotiations
Jonathan Kuminga's recent contract negotiations have created a stir within the Golden State Warriors organization. The young forward's agent, Aaron Turner, reportedly raised eyebrows among team officials by conducting a media tour to voice his hopes for a more lucrative deal while discussions were underway.
According to Nick Friedell of The Athletic, some members of the Warriors found Turner's approach to be "irritating." The agent appeared on shows such as Brian Windhorst & The Hoop Collective, indicating that Kuminga was prepared to accept a one-year qualifying offer from the Warriors if a better deal did not materialize.
Successful Resolution
Despite the rocky negotiations, the Warriors and Kuminga reached a resolution, with the forward finalizing a two-year, $48.5 million contract that includes a team option for the second year. Prior to this agreement, Kuminga was one of the last notable restricted free agents yet to sign ahead of the 2025-26 season.
There were doubts about whether Kuminga would remain with the Warriors, especially after reports emerged in July of potential sign-and-trade discussions with teams like the Sacramento Kings and Phoenix Suns. One of those teams allegedly offered Kuminga a substantial four-year contract worth nearly $90 million, but no trade compensation was agreed upon.
Kuminga's Potential and Performance
The Warriors are excited to retain Kuminga, who was drafted seventh overall in 2021 and has demonstrated tremendous potential. Last season, he averaged 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game, although his shooting percentage dipped to 45.4 percent from the field.
However, Kuminga shone during the playoffs, particularly when superstar guard Stephen Curry was sidelined. In the four games without Curry, he averaged an impressive 24.3 points and shot 55.4 percent from the field, showcasing his ability to thrive in crucial moments.
With Kuminga continuing to develop alongside stars like Curry, Jimmy Butler, and Draymond Green, the Warriors are poised to make a strong push for contention in the competitive Western Conference next season.
