Giants Commit to Wilson as Starter Ahead of 2025 Season

The New York Giants are set to name Russell Wilson as their starting quarterback for the upcoming 2025 season, as confirmed by head coach Brian Daboll during a press conference on Wednesday. Daboll stated, 'These guys will be out here competing, but Russ is our starter,' as reported by Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News. This declaration establishes Wilson's position at the helm as the team prepares for training camp.
Alongside Wilson, veteran quarterback Jameis Winston and first-round draft pick Jaxson Dart, selected in the 2025 NFL Draft, are expected to vie for the backup role. Training camp officially began on Wednesday in East Rutherford, where competition is heated among the quarterbacks. Additionally, third-year backup Tommy DeVito will also seek to secure a spot on the 53-man roster this offseason. When inquired about Dart’s prospects of surpassing Winston for the QB2 position, Daboll refrained from providing a definitive answer, as noted by Ralph Vacchiano of Fox Sports.
General manager Joe Schoen addressed the media regarding the potential for rookie quarterbacks like Dart to be redshirted during their first season. He referenced the successful approach taken with Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs, who had his first start in Week 17 of his rookie season in 2017. Schoen acknowledged, however, that plans for developing rookie quarterbacks can vary based on circumstance, recalling how Josh Allen was unexpectedly thrust into action during Week 1 of his rookie campaign with the Buffalo Bills. 'I think there's some real benefits from sitting and learning, specifically from some of the guys in the room that have the experience that they have, but if the coaching staff at some point feels it's right and he's ready, I'll leave that up to them,' Schoen stated. The Giants will aim to cultivate Dart’s skills throughout the rookie season, particularly in light of their short-term commitments to both Wilson and Winston ahead of the 2025 campaign. Training camp will continue until August 13, and if the backup quarterback position remains uncertain by August 9, Winston, Dart, and DeVito will likely continue their competition in the preseason opener against the Buffalo Bills.
