Giants Commit to Russell Wilson as Starting Quarterback for the 2025 Season

The New York Giants have officially designated Russell Wilson as their starting quarterback for the upcoming 2025 season, as confirmed by head coach Brian Daboll during a press conference on Wednesday. Daboll stated, "These guys will be out here competing, but Russ is our starter," emphasizing the team's confidence in Wilson as they prepare for training camp in East Rutherford.
As training camp commences, veteran quarterback Jameis Winston and 2025 first-round pick Jaxson Dart have emerged as the primary candidates to serve as Wilson's backup. Additionally, third-year backup Tommy DeVito will also vie for a position on the 53-man roster. When questioned about Dart's potential to surpass Winston in the competition for the QB2 spot, Daboll refrained from providing a definitive answer, noting instead the importance of daily improvement for the young quarterback.
General manager Joe Schoen was involved in discussions regarding the developmental strategies for rookie quarterbacks. He highlighted the success of the Kansas City Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes, who benefitted from a delayed start in his rookie season. However, Schoen also acknowledged that plans to redshirt rookie quarterbacks can sometimes falter, referencing his previous experience with the Buffalo Bills when Josh Allen was unexpectedly thrust into action early in his career. As the Giants navigate their roster decisions, there is an expectation for Dart to progress throughout his rookie season, despite the competitive nature of the training camp, which will run until August 13. Should the QB2 role remain unconfirmed by August 9, Winston, Dart, and DeVito may extend their competition into the preseason opener against the Buffalo Bills.
