Giannis Antetokounmpo Trade Talks Heat Up Between Knicks and Bucks

Trade Talks Between Knicks and Bucks for Giannis Antetokounmpo
The New York Knicks and Milwaukee Bucks recently engaged in trade discussions centered around superstar forward Giannis Antetokounmpo. Reportedly, the Knicks were the only team Giannis was willing to consider during the offseason, sparking a "multi-week process" of negotiations between the franchises.
However, complications arose as the Bucks did not find the Knicks' offer compelling enough. Meanwhile, the Knicks felt that the Bucks were not earnest about trading Antetokounmpo, who the Bucks have consistently stated they prefer to keep.
Giannis' Future with the Bucks
Milwaukee is reportedly concerned that Antetokounmpo may request a trade, especially given his aspirations to secure another championship. Although no formal request was made, Giannis expressed to Bucks' general manager Jon Horst that he had significant doubts about the team's ability to compete at a high level.
As a result, Antetokounmpo is said to be "keeping his options open," with speculation that he might consider a trade request during the 2025-26 season if the Bucks do not show progress in their championship pursuits.
Bucks' Offseason Moves
This offseason, the Bucks have been proactive, aiming to build a roster capable of deep playoff runs. They have retained key players such as Bobby Portis, Kevin Porter Jr., and Gary Trent Jr. Additionally, they made a bold move by releasing injured guard Damian Lillard and signing former Indiana Pacers center Myles Turner in free agency.
Despite these changes, questions remain about whether replacing Lillard and center Brook Lopez with Turner is sufficient to overcome the challenges faced in the playoffs, especially after suffering three consecutive first-round exits.
Assessing the Competition
ESPN's Shams Charania noted that the Bucks remain confident in their ability to contend, primarily due to injuries affecting other top teams, such as the Indiana Pacers and Boston Celtics. Both Tyrese Haliburton and Jayson Tatum are sidelined with significant injuries, potentially opening the door for teams like the Knicks and Cleveland Cavaliers to dominate the Eastern Conference.
The Knicks are returning a robust core, including Karl-Anthony Towns, Jalen Brunson, OG Anunoby, Mikal Bridges, and Josh Hart. However, questions loom about whether trading some of this depth for Antetokounmpo would help propel New York to the NBA Finals.
Giannis' Status and Expectations
Giannis Antetokounmpo, a former NBA Finals MVP who led the Bucks to a championship in 2021, remains one of the league's elite players at almost 31 years of age. He has been named an All-Star for nine consecutive seasons, consistently averaging over 30 points and 11 rebounds per game in recent years. Given his impact and franchise status, the Bucks are understandably eager to retain him, but it appears that winning will be the key factor in Giannis' long-term commitment.
