Early Projections for the 2026 NHL Drafts Top 10 Prospects

As the anticipation builds for the 2026 NHL Draft, early discussions have centered around the consensus first overall pick, Gavin McKenna. This year, there is a prevailing belief that McKenna will maintain that position, marking a significant contrast to previous years where the top pick has been subject to more fluctuations. Recently, McKenna committed to play NCAA hockey at Penn State, leaving the Western Hockey League's Medicine Hat Tigers behind. While there are some concerns about how he will adjust to the NCAA level, it appears to be his position to lose as the draft approaches.
Aside from McKenna, several other notable prospects have emerged in the early rankings. Keaton Verhoeff, a towering 6'4" and 217-pound defenseman, transitions from the Victoria Royals in the WHL to the University of North Dakota. His size may draw traditional scouts, but his agility and emerging offensive skills also make him one to watch. Ivar Stenberg has shown considerable promise after excelling with Frolunda’s junior team and recently taking on a leadership role for Sweden at the U18 World Championships, where he was the top performer. Elsewhere, Ryan Roobroeck has drawn attention due to his size and scoring ability, having finished his last OHL season with 87 points in 64 games, while also showing room for growth in his skating.
Other prospects worth noting include Ethan Belchetz, who stands out at 6'5" and 225 pounds, demonstrating both scoring potential and physicality on the ice. With 38 points in his rookie OHL season, his development will be monitored closely as he steps into a bigger role with his team. Meanwhile, Viggo Bjorck set a U20 league scoring record in Sweden, showcasing remarkable skill despite concerns about his height at 5'9". Mathis Preston, coming off a solid WHL season, possesses excellent stick work and offensive instincts, while Tynan Lawrence has emerged as a dynamic forward after his Clark Cup MVP performance in the USHL. Lastly, Ryan Lin, a skilled 5'11" defenseman, is expected to take a leap in his performance after a successful rookie season in the WHL. Chase Reid, an American player with strong playmaking ability, will also be watched closely as he enters his NCAA career following a strong OHL stint.
